Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) recorded its second-busiest month ever in May.
With 124,537 departing passengers passing through the terminal. That's just shy of the airport's all-time monthly record and part of a broader trend that has passenger traffic running 5.9% ahead of last year's pace.
🏘️ On Your Front Porch
XNA is busier than ever.
May marked the second-busiest month in XNA’s history and June is projected to take the #1 spot.
Why it matters: XNA’s growth is a sign of commercial growth in the area. Northwest Arkansas is a destination and XNA is a key to infrastructural growth in the years to come.
✈️ Come Fly With Me
You can measure NWA’s growth in population, housing, and now, in air traffic.
501,230 passengers departed from XNA between January and May, up from 473,346 during the same period in 2025.
That's a 5.9% year-over-year increase, adding nearly 28,000 additional travelers in just five months.
May was the second-busiest month in airport history, with 124,537 departing passengers.
Every airline serving XNA posted its strongest month of 2026 in May, while American Airlines set a new airport record with more than 60,000 monthly passengers.
🚀 What's Driving the Growth?
Several factors are fueling the continued surge in passenger traffic:
👥 Northwest Arkansas' population growth. The region continues to be one of the fastest-growing metros in the country, bringing more residents, business travelers, and visiting family members through the airport each year.
🏢 Corporate activity. Major employers including Walmart, Tyson Foods, J.B. Hunt, and their supplier networks generate significant business travel. Walmart Shareholders Week brought thousands of visitors to the region in late May and early June.
🏠 Economic momentum. New jobs and continued investment across the region are creating more reasons for people to travel to and from Northwest Arkansas.
🛫 Expanded airline service. XNA is growing. More destinations and flight options have made XNA increasingly convenient, reducing the need for residents to drive to larger airports in neighboring states.
🏡Front Porch’s Take
Airport traffic may not seem like a real estate story, but it's one of the clearest indicators of Northwest Arkansas' economic momentum.
More passengers typically mean more business travel, more corporate investment, more tourism, and more demand for housing.
XNA recently surpassed Little Rock as Arkansas' busiest airport. It continues to add routes, services, and infrastructure to keep pace with the region's growth.
As Northwest Arkansas pushes toward 1 million residents, transportation infrastructure will play a major role in supporting continued residential and commercial development.
Every record-setting month at the airport is another signal that both people and businesses are choosing Northwest Arkansas. ✈️🏠
